At Mt. Cardigan we learned that the bottom layer of the forest - the opposite of the canopy if you will - is called litter.
I assume it was called litter before the advent of what we normally think of when we think of litter.
That means that it's entirely possible and probably likely that there
are places in the woods where the litter is covered with litter.
I don't know why, but this kind of makes me sad.

Yes to be sure. But the word origin was interesting. We've been reading Huck Finn and learned that truck also more or less means stuff. So you could say that they invented motorized trucks so you could carry more truck around.
